Russian private space company NSTR RT comes out of the information shadow

The history of the explosion on the tests of the engine "Lin Industrial" gave rise to an additional intrigue. It turned out that the first tests of a rocket engine by a private company in Russia took place a month before the accident of Lin Industrial, in November 2016, and their company NSTR, Rocket Technologies. At the same time, Roskosmos TV put Nikolay Dzis-Voinarovsky's interview in the story about the trials, signing him as an employee of Lin Industrial, despite the fact that at the time of publication he was already working at the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Company of the Republic of Tatarstan. In December, the site of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Company was empty, and Nikolay himself did not want to share information about the company with the public. Then the lack of reliable information further heated the scandal, the Forum of the "News of Cosmonautics" forum had hot heads claiming that in reality there is neither a company nor an engine. Six months later, representatives of the NSTR RT company contacted me and agreed to answer a few questions.

] When did your company appear? Who is its director, and why did he decide to engage in private space activities? What is the company going to do?
The private space company NSTR Rocket Technologies Ltd. was registered on August 18, 2016, but in the active phase it passed three months later. LLC NSTR Rocket Technologies is a member of the NSTR group of companies, the goal of enterprises is to create sustainable business in the field of space exploration, space and space programs. The managing director of SC "NSTR" is Viktor Chernikov, who has been interested in everything "near space and space" since early childhood. At the moment, NSTR RT is working in the design bureau mode and is looking for a suitable piece of land for the construction of its own production base, looking for contractors for future construction.

How many people are now in the company, and where did they come from?
At the moment, directly over the project four people work, in the long term half a year we are ready to bring the number of employees to ten. If we talk in general about the specialists involved in Rocket Technologies, we can talk about 14, but they are mainly engaged in company escort. Website creation, PR, finance, accounting … People come to the company mainly on a personal invitation, the circle of specialists is not so great. A specific task is the design and launch of a private space rocket, requires a narrow specialization, and suitable people in general are known.

Where does the company raise funds for work?
The company exists entirely at the expense of private investments. We did not attract grants from outside funds.

Why did you previously hide information about yourself rather than change your mind?
Private space company NSTR Missile Technologies is a completely open company, and we do not hide anything unless disclosure of information, in the opinion of management, does not threaten the interests of the enterprise. Before the creation of our working engine, it did not make much sense to raise the "hype". The management is oriented to real affairs, and there is no special sense in investing effort, time and money in something that does not really work, but sounds like something grandiose. Statements about big goals are not yet their achievement. We announced our existence after achieving concrete, albeit intermediate results. "The first company that conducted fire tests," "the first private space company that has mastered the technology of creating LPRE." Now we pay more attention to public relations, including this is seen on our website and on the main social networks.

Your engine – why did you choose such a fuel pair, size, thrust? How did they develop, when tested, the characteristics?
Fuel vapor nitrous oxide – kerosene was chosen as a possible reserve for the future. Other parameters – according to the criterion of sufficiency for the tests. The engine on tests developed traction of 85 kilograms, after modifications on new tests in 2017 – 100 kg. The stand has passed all the necessary tests, having proved its efficiency many times.

Is this engine an intermediate stage, or will you operate it? On a rocket with what characteristics?
At the moment, the company began work on the creation of a "large" LPRE. Our second engine will already be used directly on the rocket. Under the name ERRAI, it will be able to put satellites of 1-10 kg into orbit.

What is comparative Close and specific plans of the company? What news to wait?
Relatively close: its own production base, a new LPRE, a booth, the creation of its own LV (sequentially). The company continues its work! And is preparing to consolidate, according to the previously planned plan. News in the near future should become more! Perhaps, as before, much will become a surprise for the public! But these are pleasant surprises for all who care about Russian space.


Over the past six months on the site NSTR began to appear content. It also says that apart from an ultralight rocket, the company is engaged in a project of robotic telescopes with access via the Internet. It's good that the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Company came out of the information shadow, let's hope for good news from them.
