Tesla Inc. Ilon Mask in April of this year announced a long-term project to create a truck with autonomous control, running on electricity. Mask's words usually do not differ from the case, and now it became known that the prototypes are ready and will soon be tested in Nevada. Tesla is currently negotiating with the Nevada administration to scale up their trucks on state roads.
In addition, similar talks are being conducted with the leadership of the State of California. Representatives of the state said that on Wednesday a meeting with the leadership of Tesla was held and a "talk about the company's work on creating autonomous trucks" was held. Now Tesla Inc plans to check the trucks in real work, not on the test range. By the way, Mercedes, KAMAZ and some other companies, such as Peloton Technology, cooperating with Volvo, are developing their own autonomous trucks.
In addition, Uber, Google, George Hotz and his startup comma.ai, Volvo, Audo, Ford develop their own firmware versions for cars (not just trucks).
As for the announcement of this type of cars, Mask promises that it will be held in September this year. It should be noted that the company did not post the date of the presentation, as they reported a September presentation a year ago, and left the deadline in effect.
According to information provided by the news agency Reuters, the Nevada administration and Tesla company discussed the possibility of access to two general purpose trucks with an autonomous control system.
"Our main goal now is the ability to test test trucks on public roads in Nevada and California in an autonomous mode without the presence of people in the vehicle," wrote one Tesla employee in an official address to the Nevada state administration. True, the date of possible tests in this document was not indicated.
At the moment no company has tested its vehicles in Nevada, at least freight, at least passenger cars, on public roads without the presence of a person in the cabin. As for the technical characteristics and capabilities of cars, unfortunately, nothing is known about them, the company did not provide detailed information to journalists or even state representatives, where, possibly, they will be tested. But it is known that Tesla has not yet applied for a license for testing.
Not everything is so smooth
With the fact that trucks with autonomous control can be not only useful, but very useful – for business, military, etc., almost all market participants agree. But trucks for electricity cause doubts among many. The fact is that the power reserve of such cars is much less than that of trucks with ICE, For example, diesel trucks from United Parcel Service Inc can drive about 800 km with a full tank.
In electric trucks this is at best a couple of hundred kilometers. According to a specialist in lithium batteries from the University of Carnegie – Mellon, trucks with batteries of this type can not yet be economically viable when traveling across the country.
Nevertheless, it is possible that Ilona Mask has (and most likely this is so) his view of things. No wonder he built the Tesla Gigafabrika and plans to build one more, or even two. Mask companies conduct active research in the field of energy and batteries, so that soon, perhaps, you can expect some breakthroughs, voiced by an irrepressible entrepreneur. In any case, he is not the kind of person to test trucks that no one will buy.
Not only trucks
Meanwhile, some characteristics of the Tesla Model 3 electric car became known. As it turned out, Ilon Mask underestimated some of the electric vehicle's possibilities. The operating voltage of the battery of this machine is 350 volts, the amperage is 230 amps, plus 80.5 kWh.
According to some characteristics, the new electric vehicle outperforms the Tesla Model S 75, which costs much more. Perhaps, for this reason, Mask and understated characteristics of the novelty.
The engine is quite powerful – 258 horsepower. The car weighs 1.6 tons, and the electric car from Tesla Inc. accelerates. Up to 100 km / h in just 5.2 seconds. The new electric motor works with permanent magnets, which previously were not used by Tesla. This was achieved thanks to cooperation with the Chinese authorities – it is in China that there are the main capacities for the production of neodymium, an element necessary for the creation of permanent magnets.
